I like Pcs....they put food on the table for me... :) The average computer resolution is 1024 by 768. The higher the number, the more realestate you can put on the screen. Of course, the higher the number, the smaller everything appears. The bigger the screen, you can get away with pretty high numbers. If you changed the resolution on your computer, you can get away with less scrolling, and won't need to sack the TV.

As I said before, my TV has a standard video output on it, therefore, you can plug in your computer to it. This would also be considered false advertising :) Not all tvs allow for this input. You should find out what kind of inputs your tv has. I think the mac mini's have composite output which most standard tvs support.

Good luck :)

Thanks for commenting! you have some good points; according to the apple website though it is possible to plug the mac mini into a TV directly... but you have a good point about the resolution. I'm not a tech-know-it-all, so I will have to check into. My TV is only about 29 inches, but that would be fantastic as a screen. Not sure about resolution... will have to check. So should the rez be higher then to be able to view more and avoid scrolling?

My condolences that you are chained to a PC ;-) It hurt me when I purchased a PC laptop for my mom recently, but they are just so much cheaper.

Just because your TV is big does not mean that the resolution will be large. For instance, I have a 52 inch LCD TV and it does a resolution of 800 by 600. It just means that I will be scrolling through everything but it would be really large. Check your TV resolution before you jump to purchase something that doesn't do what you want it to do :)

Otherwise, mac mini's are pretty solid computers. I am not certain that they come with the components to hook up directly to the TV (depends on the TV. My tv takes a standard monitor cable) I also haven't worked with a mac mini in several months. (my current job is PC only. I used to work with both macs and PCs in my last job)

Finally, I wish you luck. Perhaps you should buy your mac mini from ebay to save a few dollars. If all you will be doing is using it for music and movies, you may not need the latest and greatest. Just a thought.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Hi Christine
You've prompted me to post something I do with my business coaching clients - calculating the value of themselves to help them decide when to do something they love and are brilliant at and when to get someone else for the stuff they dislike doing or are less than brilliant at. It's at: http://anthonydavis.wordpress.com/2006/12/18/e-tip-68-how-do-you-value-you/
Generally, it costs a business owner 3 times their hourly worth to do something they dislike (plus the angst of putting it off!) than getting someone else who loves doing that.
Great site by the way.

Thanks Anthony,

I completely agree with you, hence the post. In fact, many companies who are not eager to outsource change their mind after they see the positive influence I, as an "outsider", can bring to their creative team. Bringing in someone new, temporarily, introduces fresh thinking, new perspectives and a new avenue for projects that were going in circles before, or just not achieving the results they were "supposed to".

Hi Christine
And the time value of money is important. Just sit in a meeting and work out how much it's costing for a bunch of people to sit there deciding to getting round to making a decision. The rule of thumb is 2p/minute per £1000 of salary including on costs and support (admin etc). So someone on £40k/year is costing the organisation around £50/hr - with 10 people in a meeting that's £500/hour! It soon adds up!
So giving team members the trust and resources - or bringing someone in from outside the organisation to do the job can add serious value, particularly if they leave the staff much more resourceful and capable in the future.
